Justice has been done!

JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE is a performance film based on the iconic photograph THE SITUATION ROOM by Pete Souza. We look into a room that we recognise as the Situation Room in the White House. We see the same angle and the same perspective as in Souza's picture. In the room Barack Obama's speech to the nation concerning the assassination of Osama Bin Laden can be heard.

A person enters the room and moves through it, successively imitating the exact position and posture of the 13 people depicted in the original. During his reenactment the person starts to mutiply, eventually becoming all of them simultaneously. The movement culminates in a brief moment in which the reenactment of all 13 characters of the photographic mise en scene is perfect. They are identical in position and posture to their originals. But with the climax, the formation immediately starts to disperse again and one after another the 13 persons leave the room. While the speech, on which the characters seemed to concentrate, has yet to reach its emotional climax within the Situation Room, the defining moment takes place. The perfect moment of the photography is over. The rest is history... justice has been done.

In his speech to the nation about the killing of Bin Laden, that is the crucial sentence - justice has been done. It is the sentence that lends meaning to the iconic press picture taken on the 1st of may 2011 in the White House. It is these words that unveil the attitude behind the events, that were shown in the photo, in that seemingly civilised, seemingly democraticly legitimised and thereby legitimising way. It is the age old American maxim 'an eye for an eye' according to which the government of the US brought about the biblical revenge as both the judge and the executioner.

The movie consists of a single take of 20 minutes which attempts to imitate all 13 persons of the Souza picture. In its composition and its dramaturgy the narrative of the work moves towards the singular and photographically inscribed moment that in our heads is projected onto the picture - the act of killing, which you don't see in the movie. It plays with our expectations, ultimately leaving us with nothing. We only know that it happened. And that is the decisive moment.

JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE is a filmic continuation of my closed circuit installation THE SITUATION ROOM from 2013.
